In cartoons, an idea or an inspiration is always represented by a
light: sparks, a light bulb turning on, pulsating rays or small
explosions. You think it’s something silly for kids, but in reality
it is a bit like that when you come up with a good idea.
Our
light bulb was one single image: a series of illustrated figures in
the style of the Renaissance ‘Naturalia’,
a scientific and artistic gallery of new living species that were
something between molluscs and insects. The impact of these figures
caught our attention straight away and there was that special
something about
them made us pick up coloured pencils and scribble and doodle ideas
that gradually began to take shape. This was how the first phase of
our work, which was spent amongst pieces of paper and Pantone, began
and became more ‘technical’ so that our designs could then be
used in Photoshop.
Our naïve doodles, drawn in pencil, had become real leggings and,
together with a final idea, they had also acquired a face: Ebba! With
Ebba we realized that our creations were actually going to be worn by
people, by you - the Lovelysally fans (and this was actually quite an
exciting moment for us!).
Styling
the leggings was our last chance to define them: Spore
is an organic collection,
it is ironic and inspired by science but it also has a cartoon feel
to it and a kind of magic personality that unites all the pieces
under one mood. But, just as importantly, it’s also the result of
the love and enthusiasm that has bound our friendship of almost 15
years!

Step after step, with all the means and patience
needed for a project that was developed purely by hand, we saw our
ideas come to life, which, for us, have always seemed kind of ‘alive’
like the organisms that we took our inspiration from.
